So pretty much all weekend long people have been asking me what exactly the deal with Traffic is. So here’s the deal, the clubs that are on downstairs in the basement of Traffic (ie, Electric City, Hospital and D1) will be staying there. But the ground floor is being turned into a cheese factory, I had a quick glance at the new music line-up in the “In Dublin” magazine, one of the nights is an R n’B night and another one is called “Sex In The City”, get the gist?. Ah well, I never really ventured upstairs in Traffic anyway except for Gravy (and previously Nylon) on Sunday nights. Unfortunately Gravy won’t be going ahead there on Sundays anymore but the lads have something else in the works so keep an eye out.
Last Wednesday I popped into the Basement club (downstairs in Mischief) for the third Junction night which featured a whole lot of techno ranging from minimal (Ja! Vit da likes of Wighnomy Brothers) to the not minimal at all (Rob Newman was playing Nitzer Ebb - “Let Your Body Learn” while I was leaving, old school!). Not a bad way to spend what’d be an otherwise dull Wednesday night!
Some more techno (and also some house of the jackin’ variety) was to be had at Electric City the next night where Dan Power and Cathal Tierney were playing. I heard me some Soundhack which made my night. I’ve uploaded the sets from the previous Electric City night (where Barry Donovan, Eddie Brennan and Mick Chilllage all played) and you can go download them here.
Aaron from Clubbing-IE says “I sometimes get the feeling that sum ppl are a bit obsessed wit EC”, ah sure it keeps us off the streets Aaron! This week Electric City has that green mask wearing medical practitioner with the DJing skills to play the bills, Dr. Lektroluv, back over for some electro based shenanigans. He was a massive hit with the crowd last time, not just because of his mysterious costume but also because he actually played a great set. Not just a novelty DJ.
A mention must go to Mark Broom who played last Saturday in Traffic. It was billed as an “acid house set” and indeed the first half was predominantly acid including some classics like DJ Pierre (that 13 minute long acid track, I forget the name if it), Bam Bam -”Where’s Your Child” etc but then he played some not-acid-at-all tracks like Afrika Bambaataa - “Planet Rock ” and Yazoo (Yaz?) - “Don’t Go”. The D1 lads have brought in a load of new speakers, all they need now is a new mixer (**please** get a new mixer!).
Back to this week, the awesome forces of Jay Galligan and Richard Brophy are re-starting up the Test night that you may remember from Bodkins a few months ago. This time Test is going to be happening every Wednesday night from 9pm - 2:30am in the Basement club (downstairs in Mischief, if I repeated that enough then you’ll start to remember!) And as an added bonus they’ve asked me to play at their opening night along with Eddie “Smiles” Brennan, here’s the full spiel:
