skkatter’s DEAF special

Unless you’ve been living under a rock that’s been living under another rock in Boulderville, Utah, you’ll know that the fourth Dublin Electronic Arts Festival is happening this bank holiday weekend. I’m not going to list everything that’s happening over the six days (Wednesday to Monday) because my fingers would start giving out to me and I need them for DJing and picking things up, but I will mention the things that I’m going to go to each day.

skkatter’s guide to what he’s going to go to at DEAF (a momentous journey lasting five days and at least two pairs of runners):

Thursday

I’ll be DJing from 11pm to 12midnight in Hogans on George’s St. It’s free in and Thatboytim will be DJing after me so I’ll probably be playing some booty electro in order to make him play booty electro too (two hours of booty electro in Hogans should be a winning start to DEAF).

After finishing up in Hogans I’ll be legging it down to Electric City in Traffic for the electro grandmaster himself, I-F. He’s supported by Simon Conway and it’s 10 Euro in.

Unfortunately because of I-F I’ll be missing Chevron and Tim Exile who are playing at the same time in The Belvedere, that’s 13 Euro in and looks like it’ll be an excellent night too, shame about these two nights clashing.

Friday

First off it’s into The Globe for some free DJing action from Don Rosco, Karla FES, Toirse, Chris “Dynarec” Rooney, Emmett Edmonds and Ross Canoe [Real Name]. The music starts at 5pm (I predict massive hangovers).

The main port of call for me will be the Undercurrent Showcase in the fairly newish venue Soul 28 on Eden Quay (beside Liberty Hall, Dublin’s rubbish wannabe skyscraper). They’re bringing over a load of electro heads from the UK including Delinquent Dialect, Dr. Skunkenstein, Heuristic Audio. They’ll be joined by such Irish stalwarts as Magnetize, Ikeaboy, Corrugated Tunnel, Chymera and more. It’s only 8 Euro in! News just in: I’ve been asked to DJ at the Undercurrent Showcase (thanks lads!), I’m on from 9:10pm - 9:50pm so drop down early to catch some fr-fr-fr-fresh electro sounds.

Other things on that night that I’ll probably miss (boo) include Steve Bicknell in The Belvedere and The Belfast Chapter (a mixture of Shine and Electrotoxic performers) in The Legal Eagle. D1 are also starting their monthly club “D1SCO” (whose name I thought up of !) in RiRa that night.

Saturday

Firstly it’s into Beaumont Hospital to get my stomach pumped and then back on town! The first major Saturday event that catches my eye is DEAF @ Film Base which goes on from 6pm to 11pm (or so) and features Mixmaster Morris, Eamonn Doyle & Rob Rowland live, and the world famous thereminist (that’s a person what plays a theremin) Pamelia Kurstin. It’s 15 Euro in but this entry fee includes three free big bottles of Tiger Beer (which usually cost a fiver in anyway) so technically it’s free! (using my beer-maths anyway)

Wooah, the ‘oul liver’s going to be giving out at this stage so it’s into the Mater Hospital for a 500ml shot of thiamin before rolling up to Traffic for the Perlon Records showcase featuring the Canadian mac daddy of the shuffle beat, Akufen alongside Dimbiman and also some D1 DJs more than likely.

Sunday

After spending the night sleeping in a pool of vomit in dirty gutter somewhere off O’Connell Street it’s back home to change and rinse the taste of stale Tiger Beer out of my mouth before collapsing onto the ground in my flat for a few hours, my body shaking like a washing machine on a high. After a few hours of this it’s up and at them again because this Sunday is THE BIG ONE, The Underground Resistance Special at The Village, featuring Galaxy 2 Galaxy live, Los Hermanos Live, Mark Broom, D1 Japan Showcase, DJ S2 and lots more. This gig starts at 7pm and goes on until late. Tickets are 30 Euro. skkatter’s kidney transplant after this gig will be 6000 Euro.

Monday

Help………me………..need……..nurofen……….then it’s a slow crawl to The Globe for the DEAF Halloween closing party featuring “very special guests to be announced” (I might bring some records in case they announce me as one of the special guests, ho ho). Once it hits 11pm RiRa will open up and my cold limp already rotting corpse, beer foam trailing out of my mouth, will slowly roll down the stairs and crumple up into a ball near the foosball table. So drink responsibly people or you’ll end up like me! Have a good weekend!
