One thing that I completely overlooked recently was the end of D1’s incredibly long running Model 1 club night. Model 1 started (as far as I can remember) in The Funnel circa 1997/1998. Unfortunately The Funnel closed down in late 1998 (it was the best club in the multiverse!) and D1 moved to Switch, which proved to be a bit of a shithole (upstairs toilets leaking downstairs into the club!) so they then moved to Tomato on Harcourt St. (their residency there started on the 30th of March 2002 I believe) I’m not sure why but things didn’t seem to work out there or in the Crypt (which they went to afterwards) but in early 2003 I got this email into my inbox:

We've found ourselves a deadly new venue to re-launch our weekly club "Model One".

We'll be starting on Friday 31st of this month. The venue is the basement club in Traffic on
Middle Abbey st, right beside Spirit. 

It's perfect for D1, 200 capacity, really nice place, low ceiling etc. More info to follow....

D1 controlled Friday nights for over two years downstairs in Traffic before changing to Saturdays there in April 2005. In their three years down there they’ve brought over pretty much every mover and shaker in the Detroit techno scene, DJ Bone, DJ Godfather, Aux Men, Robert Hood as well as a load of big “not so Detroit people” like Dynamix II, Laurent Garnier, Seymore Bits. But the best nights I had at D1 were always the local’s nights. So a big thanks to all the D1 guys for playing some of the best techno sets I’ve ever heard in a club, I’m sorry I missed the last few nights (*shakes fist at new job*) and hopefully (despite what Eamonn said in his email) there’ll be a regular D1 night again in the future.
