A the dreaded “m” word, it’s being thrown around a lot lately and in a lot of people’s minds nowadays it describes a rather tepid genre of music, sparse house beats with a few clicks and pops here and there. But luckily for us the Test Industries staff (who are pretty adept at playing the better half of the m****** techno spectrum) are back again with a brand new night in a recently rediscovered venue, The Life Bar.

The Life Bar has actually been open for years, I remember a few student related things being held there when I was busy dropping out of DCU back in the mid nineties, I haven’t been there since all these new techno nights started up there but I seem to remember it being pretty classy, of course I was 19 the last time I was there and I considered any bar that didn’t have a DJ playing The Saw Doctor’s classy.

But enough reminiscing, this Saturday Dublin’s don of white label promos, Richard Brophy, joins his fellow Test resident Jay we’ve-all-heard-about-yer-bleedin’-robot Galligan at The Life Bar with special (needs) guests Dan McElligott and Barry Donovan. Dan seems to be on the up and up, he’s supporting Magda next Thursday in Wax (we all know I should be supporting though, seeing as I’m the Polish ambassador to Ireland). Barry Donovan should be no stranger to fans of Dutch flavored electro, he’s been busy bringing over the likes of Sneak Thief, Legowelt, Bangkok Impact as part of the crack commando Lunar Disko promotion team, I met his sister at Plaid two weeks ago and she says he’s a deadly DJ, if that isn’t a stamp of approval I don’t know what is! Oh wait, I remember, it’s free in. Ah yes, the ultimate stamp of approval, free techno.

Test aren’t the only guys kicking off a new night in Dublin this Saturday, the mysterious “Black Music” group are starting a new night in Radio City this Saturday. They’re being very secretive about the whole thing, giving out black flyers and stating that “This is the club where you get the flyer with the DJ’s name at the end
of the night”, the idea is that they want you to concentrate on the music being played and not on the name of the DJ playing it. An interesting concept, perhaps heralding a new age of golden clubbing where the majority of people going out are actually interested in the music being played? We can only hope and pray. In the meantime you might want to head down and check these guys out, who knows what great DJ you’re going to miss!?
