skkatter goes to Prague, asks every girl he meets there to marry him and also visits a few clubs
In a continuing effort to visit nightclubs all around the world I decided to turn my attention to Eastern Europe last weekend and booked a flight to sunny Prague, city of castles, gothic churches, practically free beer and angelic ladies.
Oh yes, the ladies, I was only off my plane twenty seconds when I was escorted to the correct exit by one of the most attractive airport employees I’ve ever set eyes upon. Next up it was the ticket operator at the public transport information desk who sold me a ticket to get into the centre of Prague for 20 Czech Kronas (less than 1 Euro) and also stole my heart. Prague is basically a supermodel factory, I’m currently figuring out a way to make the company I work for move me there.
After wandering around Old Town for a while, visiting the obligatory Old Town Square (check my photos!) and Charles Bridge I took the (pretty short) trek out to a club called the Cross Club which is a few metro stops from the city centre in a bit of a dodgy looking area. The Club itself was a sight to behold, lots of crazy metal sculptures and art and smashed up and painted old computers stuck to the walls. The music on the night I was there was a decent mix of jungle and reggae, other times I’ve been told it varies between electro and techno, but always with a cutting edge…..eh…..edge to it. Pints where 25 Czech Kronas each, about one Euro! Holy crap, one Euro a pint! I was half way through 20 Euro’s worth when I got talking to an English guy called Dan who now lived in Prague and decided to take me on a trip through Prague’s many varied shots and liquers. I also met a few other friendly tourists and locals alike, and a few dogs and a cat. The night quickly became a haze until suddenly it was 6:30am and they were flashing the lights. Luckily for me the metro had started running again so I stumbled out and off home on my merry way. Total about of cash spent: less than 20 Euro. Did I mention it was free in to the club?
Saturday I awoke with possibly the worst hangover of my life, the kind where you need to keep perfectly still in the fetal position for at least four hours before the jackhammer inside your head finally drops down to a more bearable “manually wielded mallet hammering” level. A quick walk around the beautiful streets of the city centre will cure anybody’s hangover though, and after some roast boar at the restaurant beside my hotel (”U Medvidku” which is Czech for “At Bears”) it was off to another club that was recommended to me called the Akropolis. I arrived at around 11:45pm but it was closed, I’m not sure if I was too early or if it was closed for the night but there was no sign of life so I got the metro back into town and went to The Roxy instead.
The Roxy is a pretty famous club in Prague, it actually was forced to close down a while ago due to noise complaints from the surrounding residents but then it opened up again (somebody told me “It’s open again but is much quieter”), man it wasn’t quiet when I went there. Dave Angel was headlining, not my cup of techno flavored tea, but I still had a great time there, got chatting to quite a few people and fell in love with pretty much every girl in the place. The Roxy is a pretty classy place, with a balcony and chill out room/foosball room, it was still only the equivalent of ten Euro in and the drink was once again either one or two Euro a go. Dangerous combinations for your average Irish person, like Berlin I probably wouldn’t survive too long if I lived in Prague. I’d be going out partying too much.
So all in all, definitely a skkatter approved weekend. The city is only a two hour flight away and excellent value for money. I thoroughly recommend anybody who hasn’t been there before to plan a visit. My one gripe would be that there are a few too many English stag parties (or maybe they’re just groups of drunken English men), but I guess you’re going to get that in the touristy areas of a lot of European cities nowadays.
Photos (and some videos) from Prague here!
