My oh my, for those of you unfortunate enough to have missed the Surgeon gig last week, he did rocketh the haus. From the opening first five minutes I knew it was going to be a special set, he mixed techno, electro, reggae, acid house, pretty much a sample from all genres worth sampling. He played both the Autechre and Monolake mix of his new “Whose Bad Hands Are These” release due out soon, he also mixed in Aphex, Vex’d, an unreleased Regis mix of Oscar Mulero, that Warlock bootleg of “Der Klang Der Famille” that I regularly play out (funnily enough, I played it before him that night!), a Duplex release on Clone that Barry Donovan pointed out to me, easily one of the best sets I’ve heard in a long time and a great January techno set to compare the rest of the year’s forthcoming acts to.
As for me, I thought my supporting set went really well. I dropped such classics as Surfing On Sinewaves, Autechre’s Second Peng, Gescom’s Puzl, A1 off Atom Heart’s Repetitive Digital Noise, DJ Periferico - Whiteout, Mark Broom’s remix of Decoy on D1, Monolake - Melting, DJ Controlled Weirdness, Anthony Rother’s “Don’t Stop The Beat”, basically a mixture where I tried to keep it weird and interesting. :) The crowd seemed to really enjoy the set too, what a fun night!
I’m off skiing in Italy for the rest of the week which is a bit sad as I’m missing Cajmere/Green Velvet who is playing a house set for Electric City this Thursday (as Cajmere) and a techno set in the TBMC on Friday as Green Velvet! The TBMC was jammed the last time he was over so I’d say both it and Wax will be choc-a-block this time round, so get there early!
Here’s a few videos of Surgeon from Wax on Thursday, talk to you next week!
