The start of 2007 has been pretty hectic in skkatter land, what with two people asking me for mixes (yours is still in the works Niall Power!) as well as the start of a new fitness regime (yes that’s right, I now know what the inside of a gym looks like, a personal first!). My first proper trip outside my flat this year was down to Electric City in Wax last Thursday for a home-grown mixture of Eddie Brennan, Jay Galligan and Toirse. Mr. T was playing live and I really enjoyed his set, the first half more than the second. I noticed shades of Cristian Vogel type techno in there, weird, wonky but with an obvious funk foundation. With any luck Toirse will get some more records released so I’ll be able to pitch it all up in my own sets! (he has a habit of keeping it all a bit slower than I’m used to)
Saturday saw me make my second trip to Space Camp where I was greeted with a “No skkatters!” scrolling LCD display, those cheeky lads! The main reason I dropped down was to check out the EC Grand masters Giles and Simon but due to some confusion with a bottle of red wine and some cans I arrived a bit late and missed Gile’s set. He’s made the switch to Serato and was over in my place on Thursday night to get his laptop “tuned up” (ie, I had to remove all the viruses and trojans he got from surfing porn sites). He said the Serato worked fine on Saturday though, another satisfied customer! I’m thinking of getting it myself actually, I’d still buy everything on vinyl though, I’m a sucker for those black disks!
I wasn’t blown away by the music down in Space Camp but then again I’m such a fussy bastard when it comes to music, the crowd there seemed to be enjoying themselves and I liked the Buck Rogers visuals!
So back to the present, or rather the immediate future, this Thursday I’ll be supporting the one and only broken beat master, Surgeon, in Wax for the Electric City guys! This is a very special gig for me because Surgeon’s one of my favourite DJs, I’ve been downloading every set I can get my grubby little hands on and he seems to be veering more and more into some “Warp Meets Counterbalance” techno area, his next 12″ is going to have an Autechre remix on it, he supported LFO and Autechre in Manchester last November (great gig, I was up the front all night!), so obviously I’m very excited about this! Here’s the full line-up:
- Electric City present:
- Thursday January 18th @ Wax
- Surgeon [Counterbalance - Birmingham]
- skkatter [G.S.S]
- Giles Armstrong [Electric City]
- Admission: 12 / 10 members.
He’s probably the only DJ I’ve seen who can make an Ableton set sound interesting, I’m going to be such a Nervous Neil playing before him!
