Monolick

Begorra, t’was a grand ‘ould night of quality deep techno at Electric City last night where Monolake performed at his irish debut in Wax, complete with his patented “Monodeck” which is a massive complicated looking controller thing with lots of flashing lights, straight out of Star Trek. If only the people in Star Trek made good techno though, every episode I’ve seen where they have musicians play it’s usually some form of godawful world music. (universe music?)

Anyway I really enjoyed Monolake’s set, it was super deep, spooky, clangy, with big Basic Channel influences but all very futuristic as only an Ableton Live employee could do. Also Robert is a super nice guy, he ended up coming back to a little get together afterwards and stole us some Cadbury’s Celebrations from his hotel room and shared his bottle of Bushmills whiskey with everybody, what a hero! The only downside of the night was when his soundcard cut out near the end of his set, he got it going again but some people joked that maybe he shouldn’t be using a pirate copy of Ableton Live. Ho ho!

Here are some photos I took.

And here are some videos:

An interesting version of his “Plumbicon” track

In other news, I’m trying to find out what the general consensus is on the new “blacker than black” colour scheme of this website. So far I’ve gotten these comments:
Eda from Poland: “It looks like a funeral home’s website”
Adnan (who I haven’t seen for ages, Adnan, let’s meet up for a pint!): “Worst redesign ever!”
Stephen Magnetize: “The blackness is bumming me out, i mean, even ur dodgy mug looked better”
Giles Armstrong: “Looks good”
The Archiver: “I like the new layout! Nice and simple!”

So far we got three nays and two yays. If you like it or hate it then please leave me a comment stating your opinion, don’t hold back! I like comments either way, it makes me feel like I’m not alone here on the interwebland.
